Missourian – Ragtag Cinema’s 12th Birthday

June 30th was the 12th anniversary of Ragtag Cinema, which first started as a film series by David Wilson and Paul Sturtz. In 1998, the cinema was built as an innovative and independent cinema house that gave people in Columbia the opportunity to see movies that they wouldn’t normally be able to see.

Ragtag celebrated its 12th anniversary by holding a birthday bash with food and beverages supplied by the Uprise Bakery. Following the movie karaoke, there was a screening of the movie “Clue,” where the staff of Ragtag performed a scene from the movie.

Steve Ruffin, dressed up as Mr. Plum from the movie “Clue,” prepares food and beverages before the beggining of the movie karaoke event at the Ragtag Theater on Wednesday, June 30th.

Missourian – The Columbia Dart Association

Here are some photographs from the Columbia Dart Organization’s dart throwing match that took place on Wednesday, June 30th at the Columbia Eagle’s Aerie. Today’s match was a blind draw, in which the match-ups were random and not based on previous results or experience. There were also visiting players from Jefferson City.

Jason Snodgrass, president of the Columbia Dart Club, displays his personalized darts. Snodgrass says he prefers the blue color because it makes the darts easier to see on the dartboard.

Missourian – Fire in the Sky

Here are some outtakes from the Fire in the Sky event that took place on the Fourth of July at Memorial Stadium.

The mission for this day was to get 1) kids, 2) a dog or a cat, 3)the American flag and 4) fireworks/sunset all in one frame. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but it turned out otherwise because the closest I could get was (college) kids, the American flag and a barbecue grill.

From left, Deann Vance and Philip Mason buy cups of tropical snow shaved ice from Bill and Nancy Byars’ stand at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday. “We visit mostly every year,” said Vance about the annual Fire in the Sky event that took place that day.

From left, Mark Martin, Vickie West, Sharon Jabas, Helen Stratton and Jack Huggans listen to the Kansas City Street Band perform.

Spectators of Columbia’s Fire in the Sky file into Memorial Stadium on Sunday for a night of music and fireworks on July 4, 2010.

A few things I realized through this assignment: I wasn’t taking enough detail and close-up shots, I shoud have done some research on how to photograph fireworks and people watching them, and I should have brought along a damn tripod.

Missourian – Barrel Racing

On June 16th, there was an exhibition barrel racing event in preparation for the Missouri High School Rodeo State Finals at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Here are some of my outtakes from the event.

Contestants file in for a warm-up right before the Missouri High School Rodeo’s Barrel Jackpot on Wednesday, June 16th at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Preceding the Missouri High School Rodeo that is scheduled to begin on Thursday, today’s fundraiser provided an evening of heated competition in barrel racing.

I couldn’t shoot much during the actual event because it was dark and I didn’t have the right equipment, but I shot some feature photos of Holly and her horse Choc Lit Nic, which was nice. I hope I can borrow a telephoto lens for the next rodeo event, whenever it will be, so I can get some nice action photos as well.

On Saturday June 5th, I went to photograph Art in the Park, which was held at Stephen’s Lake Park. It was a very hot day but there were many visitors from all over the state.
