Elementary school students participate in 2012 Link Up concert

More than 4,000 3rd to 5th grade elementary students from 54 schools in West Michigan participated in the 2012 Link Up concert series at the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Link Up is a free program brought to public schools through the educational outreach efforts of the West Michigan Symphony. Through the program, students have spent the past year studying the orchestra and its instruments and learning how to play music with the recorder.

Under the guidance of science teacher Susan Tate, seven Whitehall Middle School students have made a positive impact by reducing the carbon imprint their school leaves on the environment through cutting energy costs and promoting tap water. The Carbon Busters, as students call their environmental club team, and Tate were awarded the Michigan State Senate’s White Pine Award by Senator Goeff Hansen on Friday, April 20, 2012. After the assembly, Senator Hansen joined students and teachers to help plant a white pine tree near the school building. The tree was donated to the school by Montague Tree Farm.

Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity embarked upon its 97th home project on 2055 Beidler, where a half dozen Muskegon High School students and their Muskegon Rotary Club mentors helped with the interior demolition of the Habitat Home to prepare for Chris and Samantha Berg of Wolf Lake. The couple will move into the house by the end of June.

Tiger Pride Day

Mommy and Me at the Museum

Parents and children participated in the Lakeshore Museum Center’s “Mommy and Me at the Museum” program on Friday, March 23, 2012. The program kicked off with “Learning Through Touch,” where children were given a variety of items such as furs, fossils and turtle shells to touch and observe. After the 15-minute program, parents and children explored the museum’s galleries and took part in activities inside the museum’s Science Center.

Temperatures rose to the lower 80s in Muskegon on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. According to the National Weather Service, the unusually warm weather will slowly drop towards the weekend, reaching a drop to 63 degrees on Saturday.

Robert Hornof Sentenced at Court

Robert Hornof, 27, was sentenced on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Michael E. Kobza Hall of Justice to a minimum of 19 years and maximum of 55 years for deliberately running over Lola Hornof, his wife, near Holton after earlier binding and beating her within their Newaygo home.

St. Patrick’s Day in Muskegon

Muskegon’s first-ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place Saturday, March 17, 2012 on Clay Ave. between 4th and Jefferson. An estimate of 3,000 to 3,500 people showed up to watch the parade and enjoy the after party at Hennessy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant.
